Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) and Activities of Daily Living

RPM 125 - This course allows reviews the principles of caring for patients who need  help with Activities of Daily Living (ADL). Learn to categorize the index of ADL for a given patient and learn how to develop a care plan (for approval by a health team) for an elderly patient who may have a chronic illness. Also, learn to document and monitor an ADL patient using remote patient monitoring.

By the end of this course, you will be able to help monitor a patient (who needs help with Activities of Daily Living (ADL)) using remote patient monitoring as part of their Activities of Daily Living. You will also be able to                                                            

  1. define the 6 common categories of ADL and list elements of Instrumental ADL;
  1. summarize causes that led to the ensuing decline in activities of daily living and the need for help with ADL; 
  1. explain how the Katz Index of Independence in ADL is used and its pros and cons; 
  1. explain how the Lawton Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Scale is used and pros and cons; 
  1. list common chronic illnesses that may accompany a person who needs help with ADL; 
  1. develop a care plan based on evaluation based on patient’s medical chart that lists cognitive abilities, medical conditions (such as need for RPM use, help with bathing, dressing, toileting, feeding and medication management); and
  1. be able to communicate with the health team in helping to monitor progress and adjust plans as patient’s condition changes or needs evolve, all to provide appropriate levels of care.  This includes telling the nurse how to read patient’s RPM data.
